" Learning Profile: Jacqueline Lim "
I learned a lot about my classmate Jacqueline Lim. She is from China and graduated in Shanghai, China. She has been
living in New York for four months and she lives with her Family. She doesn’t work. She studies English in the clip program
in QCC. She wants to study Business in college, but she has a big problem with her writing and speaking, so she studies
English very hard. She wants to practice her speaking more, that’s why she talks more in class. After she graduates from
college, she wants to have her own business.
" My Dream House "
I have seen many different designs for beautiful houses on TV and on the internet. I hope I have a huge beautiful house. It
has three floors. The first floor has a big living room, sofa, apple computer, television, bright lily flowers in the vase and a big
beautiful picture on the carpet. The second floor has a kitchen. It has a lot of kinds of machines in it and it can make various
cakes, dim sum, coffee, etc. The third floor are six bedrooms. Two bedrooms are guest rooms and the other four are our
family rooms. Every bedroom has a glass Jacuzzi and it makes us more relaxed. In the basement, it is bright and nice and
a small bar is under the stairs, also it has table tennis, ping-pong, basketball, and our family can play in there.
Cobblestones cross the backyard to pool and many kinds of flowers and sprinklers are on the ground. There is a big
playground in the backyard center with children’s slide, swings, fountain, and a small roller coaster. Near the swing set, we
usually barbecue under maple tree. All of these things let children be happy when they play at home. In my dream house, it
will be comfortable, light and cozy.
" Kids "
This chapter talked about how kids are different from adult. The text uses four examples to tell when kids are sick,
they often get better. For example, a three-year-old girl fell down from thirty feet and she was unconscious. The paramedic
helped her to the hospital and after she woke up, it looks like nothing had happened. If this condition happened with an
adult, they would die.
This chapter is interesting and funny. It presents some different examples of evidence when kids are sick, they could
overcome many diseases and sometimes they have unexpected results. For example, in winter, 2015, my son was 16
month old. He had a cold, so the doctor gave some medicine to him, five minutes after he took it, he throw up some blood
and he was unconscious. I scared for that, so I run on the road bare foot, I yelled and cried, nobody on the road, after a man
who was a police, he took us to the hospital, when we arrived to the hospital, he woke up and wanted to home. That truly
story tell me, the kids have good situation than adult when they have same condition.

“ Classification Essay ”
Which kind of job do you like? Some people know it clearly; others are confused by this. I will introduce some type
of jobs for you ,such as hands-on jobs, problem-solving jobs, and persuasive or leadership positions.
First, hands-on jobs means people usually use their hands when they work. For example, a farmer uses machines
to clean grasses and plow up the field. After that, they can put some seeds in the field, water it, etc. When the crop is ripe,
people must harvest. So to be a farmer, people must be strong, be in good physical shape, and have a lot of knowledge
about operating machines to protect or harvest. That is how the people work with hands-on.
Second, problem-solving jobs means finding a problem and knowing how to fix it. For example, a paramedic must
know human's body clearly and know many diseases symptoms that could help patients get better quickly. They never focus
on what happened with patients; they only pay attention with that problem the patients have. Paramedics give patients
oxygen, checks their pulses, pupils, and pressure, etc. Next, they get patients in the ambulance and write reports accurately
and quickly while taking the patients to the hospital. Problem-solving jobs fieldsneed people to be knowledgeable and
responsible.
Last, persuasive or leadership positions means people will be convinced or give someone good advice and do
things right that allowed some people to follow or guide or direct others. For example, Obama is the United State president
now. His election slogan is "forward" and he promised people to reduce the deficit, encourage job growth though small
business and make the investments in education or in energy. That was the speech for the president's vote in 2012, and it
let more people to elect him. So being a leader should know people what they want and what they wish, give them good
advice, or help people be successful.
In short, hand-on jobs, persuasive-leadership jobs, and problem-solving jobs, all need people who are
knowledgeable. Knowing which job you need will help you do your best in your function.

"How to Survive Without a Car"
Now we live in a high-technology world full of artificial satellites, computers, robots, cares, microwaves, etc. A lot of
the field of science has developed and we have already adapted to all of them. Of all these inventions, the most useful and
popular is the car. It is very easy to go outside to have a dream trip or transfer anywhere. However, if we live without a car,
how will you feel- angry, anxious or comfortable? This essay will introduce five ways to survive without a car.
First, develop a good relationship with friends and neighbors. In general, we
should be nice with friends and neighbors. Invite your friends and your neighbors to your
house to have a party; make a plane to choose a beautiful park or sights to take a trip
with your friends car, or get together with your friends or neighbor and go fishing. That
helps us to be closer with them.
Second, we should know how to take stranger’s car. This is usually called
hitchhiking. According to Images for hitchhiker “Hitchhiking (also known as thumbing or hitching) means of
transportation that is gained by asking people, usually strangers, for a ride in their automobile or
other road vehicle. The latter may require many rides from different people. A ride is usually, but
not always, free.” We know this is a good way to get outside and save money, but sometimes it is
dangerous, so I suggest you to be careful when you want to take a stranger’s car.
Then, we need to know the bus and train schedules well, and If we live without a car, we should know what time our
region’s bus or trains will come or go, and where the bus station is. This helps you to be get out easy.
Next, have a good physical body. ( walk and ride bicycle are help us) Without a car, we can achieve good body health
because when we go outside, we can walk or ride a bicycle, This is a way to do exercise. It saves money and gives us a
strong body; I suggest you walk more than drive a car and also improves our environment.
Finally, write taxis companies phone numbers in an obvious place. This way, When we have an emergency, it is easy
to contact it and use it Sometimes we have emergencies happen. If we don’t have a car, something may be out of our
control, but when we have taxis companies number , it is more convenient than walking.
In short, these five ways not only solve the problem of life live without a car, we also get good relationships with
neighbors or friends,.Meanwhile, we can get a healthy body, so it is really helpful for us. I suggest you to live without a car
and try it, maybe you can get a brand new life.

Public Health's Relation to Medicine and Dentistry e
We went to "M" building in 136 lobby from 12:00 ---2:00 to listen to professor Josph. He has PHD degree and
works in Columbia University.
First, he introduced himself and his background, how he struggled to study and how to find a good job without any
experience. The he explained what is the "Public health" and "why it is important for people". He used PowerPoint to show
us "The Publish health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of populations through education,
promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Pubic health involves the knowledge and
application of many service, and practice activities including Anthropology, Computer Science, Biology, Education,
Business and Engineer. After he had shown a story to tell us how the boy grow up from baby to adult. That cause includes
what bad way are and good way are. If we want to have a good health, we should not smoke, smile often, eat a healthy
breakfast and have a good education. Finally, he introduced about Columbia University . It only has a summer program and
he showed a school overview, academic department, Columbia MPH (2-yr. program), certificates, healthcare Management
and admissions requirements, a few people who were interested in this topic asked him some questions.
Actually, I an not very interested in Columbia University , but I paid more attention with Public Health. I understood, all
people should know Public Health is important for us. Such as Ebola, this harmful disease is Epidemic disease. It is easy to
be infected with it, and so if we know it clearly, we can protect ourselves and also teach other people to alert it. Public Health
is closely related to our life, so I suggest people please pay more attention to it and if we control it appropriate, it will reduce
the government budget and bring more benefits for us.

Rescue 471
This week I finished the book Rescue 471 by Peter Canning. The final two section are called “Memory” and
“The Job”. Although the ending is bitter sweet, it ended on a high note.
In chapter “Memory”, Peter got a call for a infant had a high temperature. When Peter got to the scene, a man set
on the couch and carried the baby. The baby’s mother wasn’t live here because the man sued the law for she took drugs.
After Peter and the man took the baby to the Ambulance, the man explained why a lot of beer bottles on the ground, he
wanted to memorized his friend who had gotten a shot with innocent bystander. He missed his friend very much.
In chapter “Asthma”, HPD dispatcher required Peter to a difficulty -breathing Asthma woman. The woman is
unable to move, Peter gave her treatment, but she against and fight for tube when Peter helps her. Finally, Peter
pushed the tube down to her throat, that saved her life. Peter did very well in this time, and he insist he would successful to
save the woman. After the woman change to be better. Peter and Arthur take her to the hospital.
In another chapter “life”, it described Peter got a call for a baby who choked but is now breathing in midnight. Peter
saw a father holding a seven days baby, she vomited and had trouble with her breathing. Peter took her carefully to
the Ambulance and checked her lungs, nothing had happened with her, so Peter took her to the hospital.
I enjoyed reading about how the paramedic work with many kind of patients , fake patients, bad attitude patients,
trouble patients, and surprised babies, that let his burnout and challenge with his job. I would recommend this
book to someone who is interested in medical field, and I would like to learn more about medical field information, we
learned many professional medical words to help me when we go to hospital or we had emergency happened. We
can talk about the patients symptom clearly and easily to doctor, that save time and sometimes save patients life.

Problem / Solution Essay
In our life, we have a lot of problems we should fix. Sometimes the problem is hard to solve, so it is hard to recover
from the problem; this is like burnout. What is burnout?
Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. Some
people know it will affect our life; others don’t know it. Now, I will present some examples that I read from Rescue 471 by
Peter Canning, “Preventing Burnout” by Smith, M.A, and “Preventing Worker burnout Can Boost The Bottom Line” by NPR’s
Yuki Noguchi reporter. These three sources described when people have burnout symptoms, and how people solve it.
Which kind of people burnout easier? “Preventing Burnout: Signs, Symptoms, Causes, and Coping Strategies” gives
us answers. “People think very day is a bad day; exhausted all the time, feel like nothing to do makes a difference or is an
appreciated; and caring about work or home life seem like total waste of energy. In many case, burnout from work,
sometimes people feeling hard to control their work, challenging , working too much so people without enough time for
relaxing and socializing, taking too many responsibilities, without helper so they can’t get enough sleep.” Those problem
cause people to burnout, so people should adopt healthy food, change habits, start the day with a relaxing routine; do more
exercise and get enough sleep. If you follow this steps, than you will have more energy and resilience to deal with many
requires.
In Rescue 471, the paramedic Peter works with many kinds of patients, such as fake patients, supervising baby
patients, drunk man or bad memory patients, etc. He has a lot of stress with his job because when he faces real patients, he
has a great job, but sometimes the dispatcher only gives him some drunk people. He is also sad with his job, and even
though he always does his best for patients, he is disappointed and depressed. Even though he goes to work, he doesn’t
have energy and is not active with his job, until a new paramedic-Rebecca joined them. Peter learned passion, compassion,
and responsibility from her. He became activated with his job and he wants to be a great paramedic again.
Another example is “Preventing Worker Burnout Can Boost the Bottom Line”. A Virginia Software Company, Aptify,
said that burnout was a problem in their company and 200 Workers lost their motivation and morale, so all the bad things
would happen. As a result the manager decided employees could take as many paid days off as they want, so employees
seem happier than before. Wist office Products Company said employees could rotate and switch jobs with other
employees to be happier. Point B Consulting explained that when employees burnout, they gave them a flexible schedule.
These examples tell us when people burnout, we should find the core problem then design solutions to mitigate those issues.
Alexandra, Sifferlin wrote the article, “Burnout in the Hospital: Why Doctors Are Set Up for Stress.” This article
explained that doctor’s emotional, physical, and psychological experience. Doctors don’t usually have time to devote to their
families or their personal lives. In fact, doctors prescribe the drugs, tests and procedures that can escalate costs, so doctors
tend to lose enthusiasm for their work, or growing cynical.
I had an experience with burnout when I lived in China. I was a manager in a car company and I worked at this job
almost eight years. I had to talk with employees and co-workers in the third year. I was scared to hear the phone ring and I
had a headache with people talking about selling cars and I was fatigued with this job. I wanted to quit, but my boss didn’t
agree with me, so I took a vacation for around two months. After that I felt better than before. This experience told us, don’t
give ourselves too much stress and pressure; this makes us to be burnout.
These articles and personal experience told us, it is easy to burnout in our generous life, so people should arrange our
life average time and give us appropriate relaxing time to release our spirit and body. This is more reasonable than usually
works every day. We should take care of ourselves be careful and nice; that will let us to keep a beautiful life.

Workfare Street Cleaner
This profile is about Sandra White. He is twenty-six years old and he is a cleaner.A cleaner is cleaning on the streets
and just takes a welfare check, without any benefits. He used to work a full-time job, and he worked on Fifty-seventh and
Park Avenue in NYC. This job was very good, and it paid vacation and sick leave. He did this job seven years before the
company downsized. He went to join a two week training program, but he failed, so he became a cleaner.
He doesn’t seem to do his job because the treatment is so poor. His supervisors are not very nice people. When it
rains, the supervisors check their work and see who looking for a shelter. Even when it rains hard, he wants the cleaner
working- without any gear, no gloves, no rain garments at all. The other thing is cleaners should hang their lunch bags on the
handles of the garbage cans that they push around all day, and cleaners must put the can to the garbage trucks, so the lunch
always smells like garbage. Cleaners’ working condition is dangerous, and two of White co-workers had problem with bad
conditions. One was killed when a car hit him; one was bitten by a dog and received seventy-two stitches and is now suing
the Department. Nobody cares about them, so he is not comfortable with this. Also, White complained that the company
never pays attention with their equipment; So sometimes he doesn’t pick the dead animals up. Last, White mentioned his
co-workers work very hard but nobody respects them; including his boss who abused the cleaner who doesn’t speak
English. In the end, White was happy to be laid off.
I think White is a nice and kind person. Even though he doesn’t like his job, he works hard and respects his
co-worker’s spirit. His work condition is very bad and the benefits are not suitable for the work, he still does it. I hope he can
find a good job or the government can pay more salary and welfare for them, so they keep our city clean and give us a good
environment.
